Sump Pumps & Waterproofing

Dry basements

Sump Pump Installation & Basement Waterproofing

Long Island basements flood for a handful of predictable reasons — high water table, sandy soil that moves water fast, and storm surge that arrives faster than any single pump can clear it. A dry basement is a system, not a pump.

Backup that works in an outage

The storm that floods your basement is the storm that takes the power. Backups are not optional here.

Sized to your water table

We measure actual inflow rate rather than fitting whatever the box store sells.

Water managed outside first

Grading, leaders and drains before pumps. Cheaper to keep water out than to pump it back.

Before-storm service

We test and service pumps ahead of hurricane season, not during it.

Sump Pumps & Waterproofing on Long Island, Explained

Why Long Island basements take on water

The water table across much of the south shore sits close to the surface, and it rises with sustained rain and with tide. Add sandy soil that carries water sideways quickly and a lot of housing stock built with block foundations and minimal exterior waterproofing, and the result is a basement that is fine for years and then is not.

Sandy is the reference point most homeowners here still use, and it is the right one. The houses that stayed dry were the ones with a working pump, a backup, and water directed away from the foundation before it ever reached the wall.

A backup pump is the whole point

A primary sump pump runs on house current. Nor’easters and hurricanes take house current down. A primary pump alone means you are protected in every scenario except the one that actually floods you.

Battery backup systems run for hours on their own and alarm when they engage. Water-powered backups use municipal pressure and never run out as long as the main is live, though they are only an option where you are on public water. We fit both and will tell you which suits your street.

Keep the water out before you pump it

The cheapest waterproofing on any house is free: extend your downspouts, clear the gutters, and re-grade so the first six feet of soil falls away from the foundation. A huge share of “groundwater” in Long Island basements is roof water landing at the wall.

When that is not enough, an interior French drain around the perimeter, tied into a properly sized pit, relieves hydrostatic pressure at the footing and gives the water a route that does not run across your floor.

Test it before the season

Pour five gallons into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should start, the water should leave, and the check valve should stop it coming back. If the pump hums but does not move water, the impeller is jammed. If it short-cycles, the check valve is failing.

Do this in September, not the night the storm is named.

Good questions

Sump Pumps & Waterproofing: What People Ask Us.

Do I really need a battery backup?

On Long Island, yes. The storms that flood basements here are the storms that take the power out. A primary pump alone protects you in every scenario except the one that actually happens.

How often should a sump pump be replaced?

Seven to ten years for a typical primary pump, sooner if it runs constantly. Test it every autumn by pouring five gallons into the pit before storm season, not during it.

Water heater went on a Sunday with a house full of family. Tony was here in an hour and a half, had the tank on the truck, and we had hot water before dinner. Priced it before he started and that was the price.

Two other companies quoted me for a full sewer replacement. Ray cameraed the line, showed me the footage, and said one joint was the problem. Spot repair, a third of the price. That is a rare thing.

We flooded twice before we called Flow’s. They put in a proper pit, a real pump and a battery backup, and then fixed the grading outside that nobody else had mentioned. Dry through the last two nor’easters.

Mike handled the plumbing for our whole kitchen renovation and was the only trade on the job who hit every date. He also caught a galvanized line in the wall that would have been a nightmare later.

Kitchen sink backed up every few months for years. They jetted the line instead of just snaking it and explained exactly why it kept happening. Two years later, no problems.

Burst pipe at 11pm in February. A real person answered, told me which valve to shut while they drove over, and stayed until it was dry. I have recommended them to half my block since.

Converted us from oil to gas and coordinated everything, including the parts that were National Grid’s job. I did not have to chase anybody once. Bills dropped immediately.
